Chapter 22
She stood there, motionless, looking down on me like a head-teacher breaking up a brawl in the school playground.
âZana, Iâ¦â
This time there really were no words to argue with. Sheâd left me speechless yet again, but this time there was a very good reason.
She was breaking up a brawl in the school playground.
And one of the schoolgirls involved was quicker to react that the other, still somewhat dazed one. Vic scrambled to her feet, all sweetness and tender loving care. âZana, honey⦠so happy youâre safe. Are you ok? How was it?â
Quicker to react or not, she wasnât going to get away with being first to put an arm around Zana. I struggled to my shaky feet, and was about to make my presence felt again when I realized I didnât need to.
Zana had pushed the consoling arm away, in an angry kind of way. âWhat the hell is going on here?â she growled at me.
âAsk her,â I growled back.
âIâm asking you, Madeline.â
I could see the gloss of tears in her eyes; see that despite her anger at the pathetic display of hen-fighting sheâd witnessed, something more important was going on inside her. I tried to find words, but they came out just as pathetic as my previous actions.
âZana, Iâm so sorry. I found this one hiding in the bushes⦠I couldnât believe she was butting in, and one thing led to anotherâ¦â
She turned away, and a hand wiped the tears from the face I couldnât see. And then her quietly-spoken words speared straight through my soul. âIâve just had the meeting from hell, and all I needed was to feel your arms around me⦠and I find this?â
Vic had backed away, watching us from a few feet of safe distance. âZana, itâs my fault. I shouldnât have come. Coop told me what was going down⦠and I just had to make sure you were safe.â
Zana spun round, spoke sharply. âYouâre right Vic, you shouldnât have come. But thank you for your concern. Madeline was the one who was supposed to be looking out for me.â
âBut I did⦠I amâ¦â
Angry, hurt eyes flicked round to pierce into me. âThis is looking out for me? Playground cat-fights? How old are you both?â
The tears were falling again, tears that were only partly to do with my indiscretions. âZana, Iâm so sorryâ¦â
Vic knew it was time to slip away. Sheâd likely have done it unnoticed, except it wasnât possible. âI need to not be here. Take care Zana, ok?â
She nodded silently to Vic as she walked quickly away. I watched her as she disappeared from sight, her perfect feathers right then a little short of perfect. And yet somehow, I couldnât find any satisfaction from being the one responsible for ruffling them. Especially as Zanaâs curt words speared into my ears, and seemed to make my embarrassment even more acute.
âTake me home please, Madeline.â
